The American: 59 Out Of 100 Stars

God dammit George Clooney, DO SOMETHING!!

The American is slow and deliberate, which would be fine if it was going somewhere we weren't expecting. Unfortunately it goes exactly where we think it may be going the moment we meet the bad guy. In between we see Clooney as a hit man slash weapons expert slash samurai, meander about, doing his job and waiting for the culmination of said job.

This is not a bad film, It's just mostly not a film for me. I sat watching and waiting, intrigued by certain characters but never really drawn in to care much about them or what they're saying.

The exception to this is a prostitute played by a girl by the name of Violante Placido who is, to be frank, one of the most gorgeous women I've ever laid eyes on.

Her presence, along with the upswing in action and drama help make the last 30 minutes or so of the film a much more enjoyable ride than the first hour.

A slow character study, The American feels like were seeing the same basic character Clooney always plays, which makes a study of him kind of pointless. If the overall story were less derivative that might be ok, but it's not.

The scenery and cinematography are glorious, as is Mrs. Placido. And Clooney is good, if unstretched.

All in all it's just a film that takes a long time telling us something we already know.
