2009 Horror Fest: Dyeing Breed: 40 Out Of 100 Stars

Movie about a girl heading to the wild, mostly uninhabited far off reaches of Tasmania in search for proof of a thought extinct tiger, as well clues into the death of her sister who died in the area nearly 8 years earlier while searching for the same tiger.

The main problem with the film is it tries to connect 3 main plots together, the search for the tiger, the search for the sister and the legend of the pieman, an original convict from over 2 centuries ago who ate human flesh to survive. All 3 are brought up and delved on but for a large majority of the movie we're never sure which one is supposed to be the focus, and neither does the script.

The woman is joined by her boyfriend, his best friend and his best friends girlfriend and sort of quickly devolves into a "outsiders vs locals" story that we've seen lots of times before and really adds not much new. Very little of the script offers anything but the usual horror cliches but there are some good chills and jump frights, they don't make up for the lack of originality however.

What the film does do very well is cinematography. The shots and settings certainly feel like you're looking at a very scary place that has seen little human habitation thru the years, and the eerie look of the film is very well done and legitimately frightening. The same goes for the look and acting of the "bad guys" in the movie, legit frightening lot they are, who have a very chilling aura about them.

In summary, the potato salad is great but the steak doesn't pack a lot of sizzle. You don't need to be dyeing to see this breed but it's not awful either.
